🐄 🍼 Passive Immunity Transfer (PTI) and how it can fail (FPTI)
At birth, calves are born without antibodies, meaning they cannot yet fight off infections. Transmission of antibodies through colostrum is crucial for acquiring immunity in newborn calves. It provides the essential immunity that the calf needs to get through its first few days and weeks of life healthy and to later grow into a highly productive animal.
The cow placenta does not allow transmission of antibodies from mother to foetus. Therefore, calves must ingest sufficient colostrum immunoglobulins to acquire passive immunity and prevent the failure of passive immunity transfer (FPTI).
This article highlights the importance of proper colostrum management and the possible consequences if this is not met.
